Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has called on United States President Donald Trump to support Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat insecurity rather than issue threats or impose designations that could undermine national unity.

Abdulsalami made the appeal following Trump’s recent announcement that Nigeria has been redesignated as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” over alleged religious persecution and claims of Christian genocide.

Reacting to the statement, the elder statesman described Trump’s comments as “a grave threat to Nigeria’s hard-won unity,” stressing that such remarks could further inflame divisions within the country.

He urged Nigerians to remain united and resilient in defending the sovereignty and peace of the nation, regardless of ethnic or religious differences.

“At this critical moment, unity, wisdom, and diplomacy must take precedence over division and pride,” Abdulsalami said, emphasizing the need for a strategic diplomatic approach to engage with the United States and clarify the realities on ground.

He further advised that dialogue, partnership, and mutual respect should guide international relations, particularly between Nigeria and the U.S., to foster global peace and security.
