Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has called on Nigerians to unite in defense of the nation’s sovereignty following recent remarks by U.S. President Donald J. Trump, which he described as a “very ominous threat of war on Nigeria under whatever guise.”
Lamido, in a strongly worded statement, warned that the consequences of any confrontation with the United States would be unimaginable and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately convene a closed-door meeting with all former Presidents and Heads of State to deliberate on a strategic response.
“President Tinubu must swallow his pride and invite all our past leaders for a closed-door meeting to find a way around this dangerous development,” Lamido stated.
“Our former Presidents are eminently positioned to engage the U.S. and President Trump through quiet diplomacy outside the media realm to resolve whatever concerns exist.”
The former foreign minister and veteran politician stressed that Nigeria no longer has the luxury of time and that unity across political, ethnic, and religious lines is imperative to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.
“This is the time for all Nigerians of all creeds to unite around our sovereignty,” he urged.
Lamido emphasized the need for “quiet diplomacy” rather than public confrontation, adding that Nigeria’s seasoned former leaders possess the experience and international credibility required to de-escalate tensions.
