About 800 workers have reportedly been dismissed from the Dangote Refinery following allegations of leaking confidential operational details through a WhatsApp group.
According to insider sources, the WhatsApp platform was originally created to mobilize refinery workers for union membership under the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). Members of the union were said to have encouraged refinery staff to join, promising them support and protection.
However, the WhatsApp group allegedly became a hub for sharing sensitive operational updates from the refinery. Management reportedly viewed the act as a breach of trust and corporate confidentiality, prompting swift disciplinary action.
“Reports from the refinery were being shared daily. Management saw it as a serious threat and acted quickly,” an insider disclosed.
Executives at the refinery reportedly considered the behavior “disruptive” and “damaging to operational integrity,” leading to the dismissal of those involved.
