The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of Operation HADIN KAI to maintain high vigilance, resist complacency, and sustain an aggressive operational posture in the fight against insurgency in the North East.

General Shaibu gave the directive during an operational assessment visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Maiduguri. The visit focused on evaluating troop performance, reviewing the security landscape, and strengthening coordination among security agencies to effectively counter emerging threats.

Addressing frontline personnel, the COAS commended the troops for their courage and resilience, urging them to remain alert and continue applying pressure to restrict the movement and influence of terrorist groups across the theatre.

He later met with senior officers of the theatre command, emphasizing the need for close supervision, strong intelligence gathering, seamless coordination, and enhanced operational posture to consolidate recent gains under OPHK.

The Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, briefed the COAS on current operations, achievements, and challenges in the field.

During the visit, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, paid a courtesy call on General Shaibu. Governor Zulum congratulated him on his appointment as the 25th Chief of Army Staff, describing it as well earned. He highlighted the COAS’ long history of service in the theatre and his contributions to the significant reduction in insurgency levels.

Governor Zulum expressed confidence that the Army Chief would strengthen ongoing efforts to eliminate remaining insurgent elements and restore lasting peace to Borno and the wider North East. He reaffirmed the state government’s continued partnership with the military and other security stakeholders.

While acknowledging progress recorded by the troops, the Governor urged them not to be discouraged by isolated incidents in the state but to stay focused and determined.

Responding, General Shaibu appreciated the Governor’s support and reiterated the Army’s commitment to restoring enduring peace and stability across the region.

The COAS was accompanied on the visit by Principal Staff Officers from Army Headquarters.
