Human rights lawyer and constitutional activist, Chief Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo, has issued a strong response to a statement credited to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in which he reportedly said: “If President Tinubu cannot protect me, I will resign.”
In a statement released in Lagos, Chief Omirhobo described Wike’s remark as “deeply troubling” and inconsistent with the constitutional framework of Nigeria.
According to him, Nigeria is a democracy governed by the rule of law, not a system dependent on the personal protection of individuals in power.
He insisted that public officials are protected by the Constitution, institutions, and due process—not by presidential goodwill.
Chief Omirhobo stressed that Nigeria is “not a kingdom,” and no minister should believe his survival in office depends on the President’s personal shield. Public office, he said, is a trust held on behalf of the Nigerian people, not a favour from the President.
He further urged the FCT Minister to place his confidence in the Constitution and the institutions of state, noting that leadership demands strengthening the rule of law rather than relying on political alliances.
Chief Omirhobo called on all public officers to stop personalizing governance, warning that democracy can only thrive when institutions, not individuals, form the backbone of national stability.
