The European Union Electoral Observation Mission (EU-EOM) has warned that Nigeria is running out of time to implement key reforms necessary for credible general elections in 2027.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the head of the follow-up mission, Barry Andrews, urged authorities to fast-track ongoing electoral and constitutional reforms to restore voter confidence and align with recommendations from both local and international observers of the 2023 polls.
According to Andrews, only one out of 23 recommendations made to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the 2023 elections has been fully implemented.
“So far, one recommendation has been fully implemented, two partially, eight are ongoing, three are too early to determine, and nine have not been implemented,” he stated.
He commended the National Assembly for recent amendments to the Electoral Act 2025 and the ongoing constitutional review, but warned that “time is running out” to make tangible changes before the next election cycle.
“Nigeria’s democratic resilience depends on reforms that citizens can believe in,” Andrews said.
The EU team reiterated that timely and transparent reforms are crucial to ensuring that the 2027 general elections are credible, inclusive, and acceptable to all stakeholders.
